AI Summary

Choosing a web designer? Use this 10-point checklist: live work, written quote, source files, SEO, support and red flags to check before you pay.

To choose a web designer, check ten things before you pay anything: real live websites you can open on your phone, a written quotation with scope, who owns the admin and source files, mobile design, basic SEO, speed, what is not included, the process and timeline, support after launch, and whether you can speak directly to the person building your site. If a designer cannot answer these clearly, keep looking.

I am Sivashankar, a freelance web developer and SEO specialist in Sathyamangalam. In 15+ years I have built websites for 100+ clients, and I work with business owners in Erode, Coimbatore and nearby towns. This checklist is what I would use myself if I were hiring, and it works for any designer, agency or freelancer.

Quick answer: the 10-point checklist

  1. Live websites you can open and test, not only screenshots.
  2. A written quotation that lists scope, inclusions and exclusions.
  3. Admin access and source files that belong to you.
  4. Mobile-friendly design.
  5. Basic SEO built in.
  6. Speed and security basics, including SSL.
  7. A clear list of costs that are not included.
  8. A defined process and timeline.
  9. Support after launch, in writing.
  10. Direct contact with the person who builds your site.

1. Can you open and test their live work?

A portfolio is only proof if the websites are live. Open each one on your own phone, tap through the menu, submit the contact form and check how fast it loads. Ask which part of each site the designer personally built. For example, you can open my work on vaishigakids.com, a kids ethnic wear online store, tarnishtide.com, an anti-tarnish jewellery store, and vistaphotos.in, a photo printing and frames store, and see the full list in my portfolio. The project details for Vista Photos are on my site too. Whoever you hire, judge the live site, not the screenshot.

2. Do you get a written quotation with scope?

A price on WhatsApp is not a quotation. A proper quotation lists the number of pages, the features, what is included, what is not, the timeline and the payment terms. Without it, you cannot compare two designers fairly, and you have no reference if there is a dispute. I send a written quotation after a free first consultation, so you know exactly what you are paying for.

3. Who owns the admin access and source files?

This is the most expensive question to ignore. If the designer keeps the admin login or the source files, you cannot move to another developer, and you pay for every small change. Ask in writing: will I receive the admin login, the source files and the domain and hosting in my own name? In my projects, admin access and source files are included.

4. Is the design built for mobile first?

Many customers in Erode, Coimbatore and across Tamil Nadu visit local business websites from a phone. Check the designer's live sites at phone width. Text must be readable without zooming, buttons easy to tap and the contact number one tap away.

5. Is basic SEO included?

A website nobody can find does not bring enquiries. Basic SEO should come with every build: search-friendly page structure, page titles and descriptions, heading order, image optimisation, an XML sitemap and robots.txt. Ask what is included, and be careful of anyone who promises a Google first-page position. Nobody can guarantee rankings, because Google decides them. Real SEO is ongoing work for a business that needs to be found by local customers, and I handle it separately through my SEO services.

6. Are speed, SSL and security covered?

Ask whether the site will have an SSL certificate (the padlock), whether images are optimised and whether forms are protected from spam. A slow or insecure site loses visitors and Google trust. If your hosting does not bundle a free SSL certificate, the certificate itself is a separate cost, so ask this before you sign.

7. What is not included in the price?

Two quotations can look similar and differ completely on what is left out. Ask about:

  • Domain name and hosting renewals.
  • Payment gateway charges, if you sell online.
  • Paid plugins, SMS or OTP services and map or API services.
  • Product photography and content writing.
  • Digital advertising and social media campaigns.

8. What is the process and timeline?

A good designer can explain the steps in one minute. My process is:

  1. Free consultation: we discuss your business, customers and requirements.
  2. Written quote: you receive the scope, inclusions, exclusions and timeline in writing.
  3. Design preview: you see the design before development starts and give feedback.
  4. Development: the approved design is built, with the features you need.
  5. Testing: forms, mobile layout, speed and links are checked.
  6. Launch: the site goes live with SSL, sitemap and basic SEO in place.
  7. 1 year support: free support after launch.

The timeline depends on the size of the project and how quickly content and feedback arrive. Ask the designer to state it in the quotation.

9. What support do you get after launch?

Websites need fixes and small changes after going live. Ask what support is included, for how long and what it costs. I include free support for up to 1 year after launch, with no AMC and no yearly support fee. It covers bug fixes, functional issues and basic technical help. Major new features, a complete redesign and third-party costs such as hosting, domain and paid plugins are quoted separately.

10. Can you speak directly to the person building your site?

With a freelancer you speak to the person doing the work. With an agency, check whether the person you meet is the person who builds. Either model works, but you need one clear contact, a reply time you are comfortable with and a person who understands your business, not only the technology.

Red flags and good signs at a glance

PortfolioOnly screenshots, no live linksLive sites you can open and test

Freelancer or agency: which should a small business choose?

A freelancer usually has lower overhead and you deal with the person building your site. An agency offers a larger team and formal processes, which can suit big projects. Neither is automatically better. Use the ten checks above on both and choose the one that answers them best.

How do I start with a designer I can trust?

Book a free consultation with two or three designers, ask each of them the ten questions above and compare the written quotations side by side. If you are in Erode, Coimbatore, Sathyamangalam or nearby, you can see how I work on my web design and web design in Coimbatore pages, or on my website development and e-commerce website development pages. Frequently asked questions

How do I choose a web designer for my small business?

Check ten things: live websites you can test, a written quotation, ownership of admin access and source files, mobile design, basic SEO, speed and SSL, excluded costs, the process and timeline, support after launch and direct contact with the builder. Compare at least two written quotations before you decide.

What questions should I ask a web designer before hiring?

Ask which live websites they built, what the quotation includes and excludes, whether you will own the admin login and source files, whether SEO and mobile design are included, how long the project takes and what support you get after launch.

Is a freelance web designer better than an agency?

Not always. A freelancer gives you direct access to the person building your site and usually costs less. An agency gives you a bigger team. Use the same checklist on both and pick the one that gives clearer written answers.

What are the red flags when hiring a web designer?

No live portfolio, no written quotation, a very low price with nothing listed, a guarantee of first-page Google rankings, the designer keeping the admin and source files, and no stated support after launch.

Should my web designer also do SEO?

Basic SEO should come with every website: page titles, descriptions, heading structure, image optimisation, sitemap and robots.txt. Ongoing SEO work, such as content and local ranking, is a separate service, and no honest designer can guarantee a ranking.

Who should own my website files and domain?

You should. Ask for the admin login, the source files and the domain and hosting registered in your own name. This lets you change developers or hosting later without losing your website.

How long does it take to build a business website?

It depends on the number of pages, the features and how quickly you provide content and feedback. A simple business website is faster than an online store. A good designer states the timeline in the written quotation.

Do I need a designer in my own city?

Not necessarily. Most of the work happens online. What matters is that you can reach the person, see their live work and get a written quotation. I work with clients in Erode, Coimbatore, Sathyamangalam and across Tamil Nadu.
