AI Summary

A business website takes 7-10 days and an e-commerce store 15-20 days. My step-by-step process, what to prepare and what causes delays.

A normal business website takes me 7 to 10 days to build from start to finish. An e-commerce website takes 15 to 20 days, and that includes your final approval. Both timelines count from the day I have your logo, text, photos and domain details.

I am Sivashankar, a freelance web developer in Sathyamangalam. In 15+ years I have built websites for 100+ clients, mostly small businesses in Erode, Coimbatore and nearby towns. So this is not theory. It is the exact process I follow.

Quick answer: how long does a website take?

  • Business website (about 5-10 pages): 7 to 10 days.
  • E-commerce website: 15 to 20 days, fully complete and approved by you.
  • The clock starts when I have everything I need from you.
  • The biggest cause of delay is waiting for content, not the coding.

That last point surprises people. But it is true on almost every project I take.

What decides how long your website will take?

Three things. The size of the site, the features you need, and how fast you send content and approvals.

A 6-page site for a clinic is simple. A store with products, sizes, payments and order tracking is a different job. It has more pages, more testing and more decisions you need to make.

And here is the part most designers will not tell you. Your speed matters as much as mine. If I finish the design in two days and wait a week for your approval, the project takes nine days longer. Not because of the code.

What do you need to give before work starts?

Before I write a single line of code, I ask for these:

  • Company logo. A clear, high-quality file. A PNG or SVG works best. A blurry photo of your shop board does not.
  • Website content. The text for each page: about your business, your services, your contact details.
  • Photos and images. Real photos of your shop, products, team or work.
  • Domain and hosting details. If you already own a domain like yourbusiness.in, I need the login. If not, I help you buy one.
  • Other details. Business hours, Google Maps location, social media links, WhatsApp number.

Side note: always buy the domain in your own name and keep the login yourself. If a designer or agency registers it in their name, you depend on them every time you want to change anything. It is your business. Own it.

My step-by-step process for building a business website

This is how a typical 7-10 day project runs for me. The days are approximate. Some sites move faster, some slower.

Step 1: Discovery and planning (day 1)

We talk about your business, your customers and what you want the website to do. Get calls? Get WhatsApp enquiries? Sell online?

Then I fix the page list and features. This step feels slow to some clients. But a clear plan on day 1 saves days of changes later. I have learned that the hard way.

Step 2: Design and layout (days 2-3)

I design the home page first, with your brand colours and logo. You see it before I build the rest.

This is the most important approval in the whole project. Once you approve the home page, the other pages follow the same style. So take your time here - but please do not take a week.

Step 3: Development (days 4-7)

Now I build the real website. I write clean code, make every page work on mobile, set up the contact form and connect WhatsApp and Google Maps.

On the technical side, this is also where I set up the SEO basics: page titles, meta descriptions, proper headings, image alt text and a sitemap. Doing this during the build is much easier than fixing it later. Actually, let me put it more strongly. Adding SEO after launch often means rewriting pages you already approved.

Step 4: Testing (days 8-9)

I test on phones, tablets and computers, in different browsers. I check every link, every form and every button.

I also check speed with Google PageSpeed Insights, because a slow site loses visitors on mobile data. Images are the usual problem. A 5 MB photo straight from a phone camera has no place on a website, so I compress and resize them.

Step 5: Launch (day 10)

I move the site to your hosting, connect your domain and install the SSL certificate, so your site shows the secure padlock and https in the browser. Then I submit the sitemap to Google Search Console so Google can find your pages.

Step 6: Support after launch

Every website I build comes with 30 days of free support. If something small needs fixing after launch, I fix it. After that, ongoing support is available whenever you need updates.

Why does an e-commerce website take longer?

An online store is not just a bigger website. It is a small business system.

You need product pages, categories, sizes or variants, a cart, a checkout, payment options, order emails and an admin panel to manage it all. Every one of those needs testing with real orders.

Payments take the most care. When I built the online store for Vaishiga Kids, a kids ethnic wear brand, the checkout had to support cash on delivery, UPI and Razorpay together. I verify every Razorpay payment on the server before an order is marked as paid. Testing that properly cannot be rushed. And honestly, it should not be.

So 15 to 20 days is realistic for a complete store that you have tested and approved. Anyone promising a full custom store in three days is either using a basic template or skipping the testing.

What usually delays a website project?

In my experience, it is almost never the coding. These are the delays I see again and again:

DelayWhat happensHow to avoid it
Content sent latePages are built but stay emptyWrite your page text before the project starts
Photos or logo sent lateThe design cannot be finishedCollect your best photos and logo file in one folder first
Slow design approvalDevelopment cannot beginSet aside time to review the design within 1-2 days
Frequent changesFinished work gets redoneGive all feedback together, in one list

Frequent changes are the hardest one. Small changes are normal. I expect them. But changing the layout after development has started means rebuilding pages, and that adds days every time.

Quick thought: the clients whose sites go live fastest are not the ones with the biggest budget. They are the ones who reply quickly and send everything on day 1.

How can you get your website live faster?

  • Prepare your content first. Even rough text is fine. I can help you polish it.
  • Pick one person to approve the work. Five family members giving feedback slows everything down.
  • Reply within a day when I send a design or a question.
  • Group your feedback into one message instead of ten small ones.
  • Decide your must-have features before we start. Extras can be added after launch.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to build a small business website?

A normal business website of about 5-10 pages takes me 7 to 10 days, counted from the day I have your logo, content, photos and domain details.

How long does an e-commerce website take?

15 to 20 days for a complete online store, including testing and your final approval.

Can a website be built in 2 or 3 days?

A very simple one-page site can be. A proper business website with planning, design approval, mobile testing and SEO basics needs about a week to be done well.

What do I need to give my web designer?

Your logo, the text for each page, photos, domain and hosting details, and extra details like business hours, location and social media links.

What is the most common reason websites get delayed?

Late content. Waiting for text, photos or the logo causes more delay than any technical work.

Do I need to write the website content myself?

You know your business best, so the facts must come from you. Rough notes are fine. I help turn them into clear, simple text.

Is support included after the website goes live?

Yes. I give 30 days of free support after launch. Ongoing support is available after that.

Will my website show on Google as soon as it is live?

Not instantly. I submit your sitemap to Google Search Console at launch, but Google decides when to index and rank your pages. Ranking for competitive searches takes time and good content.
